The price shown above is the one we last read from the seller. During the sale it is usually higher than what you will actually pay, so check the figure on AliExpress rather than ours.

Discount codes are issued per country and most of September’s do not apply in the US, UK, Canada or the EU. Whatever code you qualify for appears at the AliExpress checkout.

Treat the price as a guide, not a quote. AliExpress sellers change prices through the day — we have watched items here move by more than 20% between one morning and the same evening — and the figure above is for one option, so a different size or colour usually costs something different again. App-only deals and personal coupons move it again at checkout. Always read the price on AliExpress before you buy. Figures come from the AliExpress listing, checked 1 day ago. The feedback score is the seller’s, not a rating by us — we have not tested this product.

A mat is not just tangled fur. It tightens over days, pulls on the skin underneath and traps moisture against it, and by the time you find one, brushing at it simply hurts. A dematting tool has curved blades that cut through the mat rather than pulling it, breaking it into pieces small enough to comb free.

Key Benefits

  • Splits mats rather than dragging them against the skin
  • Curved blades cut on the pull stroke, away from the body
  • Far less painful than working a mat out with a brush
  • Saves coat that would otherwise have to be shaved off
  • Rounded outer edges reduce the risk of catching skin
  • Works on the armpit and behind-the-ear mats that form first

Best For

  • Coats that have started to mat
  • Behind ears, armpits and the base of the tail
  • Long-coated and curly breeds
  • Rescue dogs arriving in poor coat condition
  • Rescuing a coat before it needs shaving

How It Works

Hold the base of the mat firmly against the skin with your other hand so nothing pulls, then work the blades through the outer edge of the mat in short strokes away from the body. Split it into strips, then comb the strips out. Work in short sessions — a big mat is a job for several days, not one sitting.

Pros and Cons

Pros: Handles what a slicker cannot, saves coat from being shaved, and hurts the dog far less than brushing a mat out.

Cons: These are blades close to skin, and mats sit tight against it. Working too fast or without holding the base is how dogs get cut. A mat flat against the skin, or one covering a large area, is a job for a groomer or vet, not a home tool.

Things to Consider

  • Always hold the mat base against the skin so nothing pulls
  • Cut away from the body in short strokes, never towards it
  • Mats flat to the skin need a groomer or vet, not a home tool
  • Work in short sessions rather than one long one
  • Check for sores underneath once a mat is removed
  • Prices, availability and shipping times are set by the AliExpress seller and can change
