Travel Gear
Travel gear splits cleanly into two problems: keeping a dog safe in a moving car, and carrying a small dog that cannot walk the whole way.
Car restraints deserve a straight answer. A tether that clips into the seat belt socket stops a dog climbing into the footwell or reaching the driver, and distraction is the everyday risk — far more likely than the crash people picture. But almost none of these tethers are crash-tested, and in a real collision the forces involved are well beyond what a clip and a strap will hold. Treat them as distraction control, not crash protection. For genuine crash safety, a certified crash-tested harness or a secured crate is the honest answer.
Two rules apply to every car restraint here. Always attach to a harness, never a collar — a collar concentrates force on the throat. And never put a dog in a seat with an active airbag.
Seat covers solve a different problem. A hammock slung between the front and rear headrests closes the rear footwell so a dog cannot slide into it, which matters most for older dogs that struggle to climb back out. Water-resistant fabric handles a damp dog; a genuinely waterproof backing is what you need for a dog that swims.
Carriers differ mainly in where the weight sits. A sling puts it on one shoulder and packs into a handbag — fine for the last ten minutes of a walk, poor over distance. A front carrier centres the load against your chest and keeps the dog in contact with you, which settles anxious dogs. A backpack moves the weight onto both shoulders and is the only format that works for a genuine hike. All three have firm weight limits, and overheating is the risk owners underestimate, because a dog pressed against fabric warms faster than the weather suggests.
