Walking in the dark
Between October and March most dog walks happen in the dark at one end or the other. A light-up collar is the cheapest genuine safety upgrade on this site: a driver sees a lit collar several seconds before they see a dark dog, and several seconds is the whole thing.
The practical differences are small. A USB-rechargeable collar means no battery hunting but needs remembering; a coin-cell pendant clips onto the collar the dog already wears and is the easiest to retrofit. Fibre optic gives an even glow rather than a row of dots, which is more visible side-on.
Steady beats flashing for judging distance and speed, and flashing beats steady for catching an eye in the first place. If you walk on a road, a light on the traffic side is worth more than a brighter light on the other.
None of this makes a dog visible in daylight fog. Dog Trackers, Lights and Training Tech covers lights alongside trackers.
